Downeast LNG will construct and operate an LNG liquefaction project in Robbinston, Maine. The project will be capable of liquefying approximately 450 mmcfd of pipeline-quality natural gas (including fuel and inerts) or 3 million tons of LNG per year. If market conditions warrant, the project will also have the capacity to regasify up to 100 mmcfd.
The Downeast LNG project will liquefy natural gas into LNG and store it in a 160,000-cubic-meter full containment storage tank. LNG will be exported by LNG carriers at the project’s marine terminal via Head Harbour Passage. An estimated 50 to 60 ship transits will occur annually.
The Downeast LNG project has been proposed because of the increased natural gas production in North America, specifically drilling productivity gains that have enabled rapid growth in supplies from unconventional gas-bearing formations. The export of natural gas as LNG would provide a market solution to allow the further development of these emerging sources of natural gas.
While the Project is principally an export facility, it will also have the ability to reduce its liquefaction rate on the coldest winter days. By making its gas available to Maine and New England consumers the project will alleviate shortages of natural gas during the peak demand months. The storage capability of the terminal may allow it to also act as a peak–shaving facility during the peak demand periods. In addition, the terminal can be an import terminal with natural gas send-out capacity should current market dynamics shift dramatically in the future.
Downeast LNG has taken a rigorous and systematic approach to the development of our proposed LNG terminal. From the start, our objectives have been to develop an LNG project that:
- Enhances the expansion of the infrastructure to transport natural gas supplies to Maine and New England.
- Works in partnership with the people of Robbinston and Washington County to create jobs and promote meaningful, sustainable economic development.
- Has a minimal impact on the natural environment and adheres to the highest safety standards in the industry.
